The Kokopelli Tour 2001

We visited Red River, New Mexico, while staying in Eagle Nest. Both these towns are old mining camps high in the Sanga De Cristo mountains.  From our cabin in Eagle Nest, to the east we could see Mount Baldy, at 12,000 feet, and behind us to the west, Wheeler Peak, New Mexico's highest summit at over 14,000 feet. Red River sets in a valley below Wildcat Pass. The town is surrounded by alpine slopes, cut with ski lanes.  The folks were very friendly, and we had a great lunch at the Lodge on the main drag.  The image at right is in our cabin at Eagle Nest. All solid knotty pine interior, with a really "cozy" shower and bathroom! The tv had an antenna with tin foil, and 4 fuzzy channels. Joe described it as a "ripoff".

From Eagle Nest we moved to a campground in the Kit Carson National forest. We were in the Taos Canyon, about 10 minutes from Old Town in Taos. Our site was very nice, with picnic table, fire pit and babbling brook. It was also about 30 feet from U.S. highway 64, the main route from Raton to Taos, and points south. Amazingly, because the trees, we could barily see the road, and no cars could see us!  After 11pm, it was very quiet. There was also a very large, very old Ponderosa pine tree near us, that towered over the camp. It blocked the morning sun until well after 10am.  Did I mention, it was "monsoon" season.  It rains about .15 inches, but it takes several hours. This shot shows Beni firing coffee and chow at the Taos Canyon camp. Notice, "no cars". We had to ford a creek to get to this spot.
